Here at The Engine Room, we ended last year on a high, receiving a Lux Life Hospitality award for Consultancy of the Year 2023. The award is designed to recognise the best in the business when it comes to hospitality. From restaurants to resorts, the awards look to outline and celebrate those who have innovated and adapted to changing conditions in order to offer exemplary service and premium customer satisfaction.

Our Managing Partner, Andrew Lovell, responded to the award, saying:

“Really excited to have received this award. It’s a real testament to the hard work and dedication to the success of our Partners businesses from all the team at The Engine Room. Looking forward to more of the same in 2024.”

And he is right. Our success is due to the support we provide our partners to ensure their success. We consider our work with them as a collaboration and, unlike most consultancies, we create more value by continuously working alongside our partners, becoming integrated into their teams and hugging their ambitions and their ambitions beyond those.

This year we have seen top-line sales, profit growth from 100% of our partners, as well as the creation of sustainable plans to cement longevity and ensure growth. We have had the privilege to support new ventures and ideas from start-ups to the diversification of revenue lines to opening new sites, expansion of geographical spread and the launch of new restaurants and café concepts. We cannot wait to see our partners plans unfold in 2024 and beyond.

What it Means to Win Best Consultant

It is great to celebrate the accolade of ‘best consultant’ and we are very proud and thankful but its quite interesting we arrive in this category. Within the team we often debate whether or not we even like the association of the term ‘restaurant consultant’.

One of our partners, Dave Strauss of Bouchon Racine, brilliantly summed up why we have begun to migrate away from the term in an interview on why he works with The Engine Room. “I was quite sceptical to begin with, I hate consultants, we’ve both been consultants and it’s worthless but this was different and not consultancy. TER became part of the team without being part of the team and that was exactly what we needed.”

We put on the ‘consultant’ jacket and then we don’t quite like the fit and take it back off again. We have realised that we are not really ‘consultants’. We are capable of advising as a consultant does and carry heavyweights in the team that definitely fit the bill but that’s not the potency of what we do.

What We Do at The Engine Room

We are experts in Commercial Management. This is important to identify as neither purely financial or operations experts but the bridge between those and the brain that can bring balance to a business. For most businesses this is a new place from which to create clean and long-term strategy.

We have created an entity to help hospitality businesses thrive that is based on proven tools – delivered and held by experience led practitioners. We organise your data, streamline your business and offer both simple and profound solutions to help manage your success and allow you to lead and lean into what you do best. This creates and maintains ‘the engine’ within your business so you are free to play on top.

We don’t really mind being called consultants, or whichever other category we fall into, what we care about and like most is that day in day out we realise this is the way to help the industry we all love and want to see thrive in these adverse times and that last year has made at least one thing very clear – it works.
